to remember this morning

BY MAGGIE BELISLE

the hawk
spanning the shredded cornfield
the sky filled
with a returning armada
of geese
the cold giving way to
light
the return of
the sun
of restlessness
of wonder

to south
the v formations
spread
ebbed and flowed
a dotted line of
seashore tterns of waves
in the sky

and all around me
the
matter of time
consumed my thoughts
and i felt
older
than my years
in
time

i felt
endless
and
ending
and nearing
the inevitable

smiling to myself i cursed
the aging of my body
the loss of mental
agility
only
because
i never saw
Greece
the Grand Canyon
the coast of Kerry
or rode at night on
horseback
drenched in
moonlight
beneath
the desert stars
